UNITED NATIONS Kalen Ballage Jersey , April 10 (Xinhua) -- Untied Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday welcomed the establishment by the Security Council of a UN peacekeeping operation in the war-torn Central African Republic (CAR).
"The secretary-general welcomes the adoption today of Security Council Resolution 2149, establishing the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA)," said a statement issued here by Ban's spokesperson.
"He trusts that this important decision of the international community will lead to the immediate, concrete and sustainable support that the Central African people need and deserve," the statement said.
Under the new resolution, the Security Council created the peacekeeping force of up to 10,000 military personnel, including 240 military observers and 200 staff officers Durham Smythe Jersey , and 1,800 police to bring peace and stability to the country, where violence between Christians and Muslims has led to fears of a possible genocide.
The Council also decided that the African-led International Support Mission in the Central African Republic (MISCA), currently deployed in the country to help restore order, will transfer its authority to MINUSCA on Sept. 15, 2014.
In his statement, Ban commended the "tireless efforts" of MISCA and the recently authorized European Union Force in the CAR, pledging that "the United Nations will work closely with MISCA to ensure a seamless transition to MINUSCA."
Ban also called on all partners to increase their support to MISCA until MINUSCA becomes fully operational Jerome Baker Jersey , while pressing for "an immediate cessation of the killings, targeted attacks and other atrocious human rights violations that continue with total impunity" in the country.
"This is the moment for the international community to demonstrate its collective support to the efforts undertaken by the Transitional Government, under the leadership of Catherine Samba-Panza, to bring long-lasting peace, stability and reconciliation to the CAR," he added.
There has been a recent escalation in fighting in the CAR capital, Bangui, between Christians and Muslims. More than 650,000 people are still internally displaced, and over 290,000 have fled to neighboring countries in search of refuge.

BEIJING Laremy Tunsil Jersey , Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-two crew members, including 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis, have gone missing after two vessels collided off China's east coast Saturday evening, China's Ministry of Transport said Sunday.
The collision, between a Panama-registered oil tanker and a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter, occurred at around 8 p.m. Saturday in waters about 160 sea miles east of the Yangtze River's estuary, the ministry said.
The 32 missing crew members were all from the oil tanker, which caught fire and tilted toward the right side after the collision.
All 21 crew members on the bulk freighter -- all Chinese nationals -- have been rescued Cordrea Tankersley Jersey , according to the ministry.
The 274-meter-long oil tanker SANCHI, owned by an Iranian shipping company and with 136,000 tonnes of condensate oil on board, was traveling from Iran to the Republic of Korea (ROK), according to the ministry.
The ministry said that as of 9 a.m. Sunday, SANCHI was still floating and burning, and the oil on board spilled into the sea, without specifying the area of contamination.
The 225-meter bulk freighter CF CRYSTAL carried 64 Raekwon McMillan Jersey ,000 tonnes of grain and was partly damaged. It is owned by a Chinese shipping company and was traveling from the United States to Guangdong, China.
Chinese maritime authorities have dispatched eight vessels, including three specialized cleansing vessels, for search and rescue. After coordination by the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center, the ROK dispatched a coast guard ship and a fixed-wing aircraft to assist in the search and rescue.
"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the accident," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Sunday, adding that the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
