KIGALI， Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Agricultural experts are calling for better collaboration and more investment to boost climate-smart agriculture in an effort to tackle climate change.

At a sub-regional workshop on investments in climate-smart agriculture， being held in Kigali， experts said it was difficult to maintain food security on the continent when about 90 percent of regional agriculture is rain-fed.

The workshop， organized by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)， brought together agricultural experts from 11 countries in Eastern Africa.

Climate-smart agriculture involves use of technologies and good farming practices not vulnerable to climate change effects.

The East Africa sub-region is among the regions in the world most affected by and vulnerable to climate change and climate-related hazards， according to experts.

Rural livelihoods in the region are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to widespread poverty and their dependency on rain-fed agriculture.

Yet in East Africa， agriculture is seen as a major engine for economic development， poverty eradication and the attainment of food and nutrition security.

Moses Marwa， Principal Agriculture Economist at the East African Community Secretariat， said that the pace at which agriculture yields are declining is worrying， which was attributed to ecosystem degradation and deforestation.

Agriculture accounts for almost 32 percent of the region's gross domestic product (GDP) and employs about 80 percent of the population in the region.

Some 50 percent of the raw materials that the region uses in its industrial sector， such as sugar， coffee and tea come from agriculture， Marwa said， adding that this stresses the need to pursue smart-climate agriculture.

Barrack Okoba， climate-smart agriculture expert at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)， called on countries in the region to develop strategies to raise resources and investments in climate-smart agriculture.

Eshete Dejen， an agricultural expert at Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)， said climate change effects can be addressed through regional collaboration.

Talking about the region's potential in terms of natural resources， Dejen noted that crop yields can improve if people make investments in agriculture technologies.

He decried the fact that only 50 percent of the arable land in the region is cultivated.

East Africa's agriculture sector offers great potential to unite hunger eradication and sustainable development goals with climate action， and this can be done within the framework of climate-smart agriculture， according to FAO.
