Chinese netizens have berated US President-elect Donald Trump for his scant knowledge of diplomacy for tweeting on Monday that the US disagrees with China's construction activities in the South China Sea.
Since accepting a telephone call from Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen Derrius Guice Redskin Jersey , Trump has continued to write posts about Taiwan and the South China Sea. ""Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency (making it hard for our companies to compete), heavily tax our products going into their country (the US doesn't tax them), or to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don't think so!"" Trump said across two tweets on Monday.
The tweets received 73,000 likes and 23,000 shares within 10 hours, and also triggered uproar among Sina Weibo users, most upbraiding Trump for having the temerity to suggest that China needs to ask him permission for its activities.
""No, we didn't ask you (about our construction activity in the South China Sea), do you have any problem with that?"" a Net user responded. Another Chinese netizen said, ""Did you ask us before you picked up Tsai Ing-wen's phone call?""
It is not the first time Trump has criticized China on the currency issue. According to Bloomberg, during the presidential campaign, ""Trump threatened to brand China a currency manipulator and slap a 45 percent tariff on China imports.""
Maintain momentum
In response to Trump's Monday tweets, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told a daily briefing on Monday that the Chinese side would not speculate about the motivation of Trump and his team, adding that the two countries need to maintain the great momentum in Sino-US economic ties.
""China usually will not cause provocation unless a new US president adopts a tough stance on China once he takes office, let alone such a president-elect whose diplomatic policies remain unclear,"" said Liu Weidong, a research fellow at the Institute of American Studies of the China Academy of Social Sciences.
On Saturday, Trump tweeted that ""The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you,"" and ""Interesting how the US sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call.""
A netizen asked, ""Can a Twitter post replace the White House spokesman? Or the US Congress? Of course we should pay attention to Trump's tweets, but we need to take his words with a grain of salt.""
Breaking protocol
Adept at using social media since the presidential election, Trump is attempting to use his private channels to freely lash out at critics in the US who said he broke with decades-old diplomatic protocol by talking directly to Tsai, Liu said.
""Trump is also expressing his dissatisfaction over the Obama administration's warning about Trump's interference in the current government's diplomatic policies,"" Liu said.
Between Facebook and Twitter, Trump now has 16.7 million followers. His Facebook page has nearly 16 million likes, and his use of social media played an important role in his election victory.
Trump's tweets, which seem to be off-the-cuff on most occasions, often aroused ire during his election campaign. Trump promised not to tweet as much if he was elected president in an interview with ABC in March but he held his critics in contempt, saying ""other people don't like it because they have 15 followers.""
Even Trump's campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, once suggested that media pay less attention to his tweets.
The Chinese public has shown a great interest in Trump during the campaign as his personality is so unusual that they found him straightforward and entertaining. Now that he is president-elect, they might think otherwise.
""He is just so stupid, does he realize that he just gave us a perfect reason to be tough [on the US] in the South China Sea,"" another netizen added. ""Make every Chinese hate you before you formally become US president. Come on Trump, this is not wise,"" a netizen on qq posted.
However, an online poll by the Global Times in March found that 54 percent of Chinese would vote in favor of Trump.
Trump has constantly changed his strategies on the South China Sea issue. ""I don't think we are going to start World War III over what they did [in the South China Sea], it affects other countries certainly a lot more than it affects us,"" he was quoted by the Washington Post as saying in March.
The South China Sea dispute appears to have eased since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak visited China. In November, Duterte declared a no-fishing zone around Huangyan Island.
