The most common type of emerald cut is the rectangular emerald diamond. That said, note that it is all a matter of proportions and it is possible to find a square emerald cut.
While some people may simply love the emerald cut, others prefer the look but not the rectangular shape.
The square emerald cut is for people who prefer a diamond that is quiet yet gives off the feel of vintage sophistication that is often associated with the emerald cut.
Many people confuse the square emerald cut with the Asscher cut. And while both are step cuts and appear similar at first glance, they have a lot of differences between them.
The main reason why both the square emerald cuts and the Asscher cut stir so much confusion is that both of them have a square shape.
One way to tell the square emerald apart from the Asscher cut is that the latter has truncated sides resulting in an octagonal look. On the other hand, the emerald cut has a squarer look without the truncated edges.
Also, the facets in the square emerald are much smaller compared to those in the Asscher cut while the Asscher cut has more play of light compared to the square emerald cut.
Only square or rectangular diamonds can be step cuts. Their defining feature is straight lines running parallel to the sides of the square emerald cut diamond.
Like all step cuts, the square emerald highlights the cut and the clarity of the diamond through its luster and larger facets.
Due to the large table facets, it is not recommended not to go too far down the clarity scale as any imperfections will be easily noticeable. That said, step cuts are not as expensive as their fancy cut counterparts which means that the diamond shopper can get a good deal. |
