Loyalty Is The Enemy
Don’t feel the need to get married to a particular photo storage platform. If the company running that platform changes rules, the way photos are stored and viewed, or has a massive price increase, always have the option to go somewhere else.
Photo Finish
The most laborious part is the hours of grunt work you’re going to have to put in to start sorting those photos! This is why I challenge you to get ahead of them right now.
How much time do you spend on your phone now just messing around while you’re barely paying attention to a show you’re streaming? Use that time to start favoriting photos, deleting useless ones, and putting together a collection that you want to share. The rest should go into an archive, which can live on backups and flash drives, and shouldn’t be hogging any precious cloud storage space. This could take you weeks or months, but what’s the rush? Get it all down to a manageable level then set aside time each year, like around the holidays, to sort new additions into your collection. Think of it as curating family history so future generations can enjoy it without being overwhelmed.
For those who really want to game the system and pay as little as possible, you can follow this advice I give in my book, which puts things into perspective: “Sometimes having limits can be a good thing. 5GB of storage equals around 1,000 photos. If you want to avoid paying a storage fee for the rest of your life, when you hit the limit you can thin the herd to only the best. Not easy, but 1,000 photos are still more than our grandparents ever took in their entire lifetime.”
